Sv: Rollkür- Varför denna metod?
kl

Ulf-Michael Stumpe, vet, dilates the right nostril with his fingers and inserts a slim black pole. The gelding looks irritated but remains standing calmly. "This is a video-camera, an endoscope,
" the 29-yr old explains.
"Recordings are recieved via radio wavey by my laptop. While the horse is being lunged or ridden, I can thus examine the horse's pharynx and lanrynx". This endoscope is new: up till now, the respiratory tracts could only be examined while the horse was standing still or on the treadmill, as older equipment was so big that it had to stand next to the horse.
Together with the company Videomed GmbH from Munich, Stumpe developed a more handy device: The invention consists of a small black box which is fastened to the cavesson, a camera and a saddle bag which holds the transmission-equiment.
The endoscope is already being used by vets as well as by the Brandenburg Breeding Station in Neustadt/Dosse, to gain new data from the horse's pharynx.
Scientists of the Graf-Lehndorff-Institute for equine sciences use the device to examine the consequences of Rollkur - that training method which is also called Hyperflexion and during which the rider pulls the horse's head to its chest.
It goes on and on - basically they checked 16 horses ridden in Rollkur for two weeks and found that the respiratory tubes would tighten, cappilaries burst and muscles harden. Pressure in the pharynx increases and the oxygen supply is depleted. Also, when photgraphed with an infrared camera, the area behind the ears (about at the atlas) is shown to cramp. The horses secerned more cortisol due to being massively stressend and their backs were tight.
The vets conclude that Rollkur is an unphysiological method of training which harms the horse and causes a large amount of stress. "There should be no space for such methods if the horses are to be done justice", says Prof. Christine Aurich, Head of the Graf-Lehndorff Institut
