Träna engelskan?

I arrived yesterday to southern sweden, and I´m already cold! Tomorrow it´s time for me to get on the train and head back to the north, I´v heard it has been -25... Don´t know if I like it, really...
Oh yeah, we have like -17 here, and I live in the southern part of Sweden. I'm not envious of the cold up in the north though, but it's getting crazy cold lately. I remember when I was little the coldest was kinda -10, but now it's closer to -20 sometimes.

Wow, that cold down in the south? And I was planning on moving south this year! :cautious: But I guess it can´t be worse, at least. Mud isn´t great either, I do like it when the ground is frozen.

By the way, what is the difference between mud and clay? Different accents? Somebody?

Yea, but it's still a bit warmer than the north. :p

I had to use google on that one and here's the answer it could find:
"Clay is a specific kind of mud.
Mud is a mixture of water and soil (or "dirt"). Soil is made up of small rock particles of various sizes, as well as some organic material, like decomposed plants. The kinds of rock particles found in soil are called sand (large particles), silt (small particles), and clay (even smaller particles). Soil with a lot of clay in it can be used to make bricks and other objects, like ceramic plates or coffee mugs, to be baked in a kiln, where the particles bond with each other due to the high heat and make a strong object."

I would say clay is the form the use in art school and do sculptures and mud is the brown gooey mess in the horses pastures.

And now it´s official that the ninjakitten is to lazy to google stuff... damn.

Thanks for your effort on teaching me the mysteries of mud! I was starting to think that mud was american and clay english. But that´s not the case, then. So I do like clay, but not mud. I hate mud.

Well I know the differences, it's just kinda hard to explain, though I think I managed to sum it up pretty good, after the google answer. :p

Ah, it's new not knew, even though it's pronounced kinda the same. English is kinda tricky sometimes. :p
I knew the answer.
The answer was new.

I shall now go and dig a hole in the garden and hide there until this thread is dead and buried! Please, just forget it, okay? I can´t live with the shame.

It´s like when I wrote that "the hole house is on fire".

:banghead:

Ah no, it's okay. We all make mistakes, and it's fine as long as we learn from them and get better.
I've probably done some mistakes back in the day too, and I'm still far from perfect. Honestly I doubt I'll ever be, but hey it's important to be able to understand each other, and I knew what you meant even if you made a mistake.
This thread point is to help after all. :)

Oh yes, I just hate to do, how do you call it in english, mistakes that I do know about but I just did because I wasn´t paying attention. Slarvfel?

English sure isn't easy.

Whether the weather be fine
or whether the weather be not
whether the weather be cold
or whether the weather be hot
We'll weather the weather
whatever the weather
whether we like it or not

I haven't seen this English thread before, fun! I live in England and I speak English pretty much all day, but maybe I'll join you guys. It's always good with a bit of practice ;)

I enjoy learning British and keeping track of all these small words that are different. It sounds so much cuter with rubbish and sweets instead of trash and candy. Unfortunately everyone keep guessing that I'm American so I'm not sure I'm making that much of a progress yet.

I saw @niphredil writing something about practicing Spanish on the first page, I would have loved to do that but I wouldn't be able to contribute much :p

In the U.K. this is now causing disturbance:

With the snow and ice expected the roads may well be gritted, if you walk your dog on gritted roads/paths please make sure that their paws are washed either by walking them through a few puddles away from the gritted surfaces or by dipping their feet in fresh water once at home. Every year hundreds of pets throughout the country become seriously ill and in some cases die because of the rock salt and antifreeze being used during the cold snap. Dogs and cats walk through the substances left by gritters trying to clear roads and car drivers defrosting their windscreens and then licking them off their paws. Consuming rock salt can cause dehydration, liver failure and pancreatitis, while antifreeze contains the chemical ethylene glycol, which can be lethal when ingested.

I'm telling my pet caring friends, that we're having this conditions 4-5 month each year, and I've never heard of pets dying around me.
Does anyone of you take special care of your dogs because drivers using what we in Sweden call spolarvätska?

No, but I have seen what salt does to my shoes so I wouldn't be surprised if it isn't too good for the paws. When I had pets, we didn't live where a lot of salt was used, so it's not something I've had to worry about.
