Rhodococcus equi
Imp. disease of foals1-4 months of age. Gives a bronchopneumonia and lung abscessation. It is generally aquired by inhalation of dust contamined with R. equi. (Finns normalt i jord och tarmarna hos djur bl a häst ffa föl upp till 3 månader- opportunistisk) A build up with r.equi can occuron pastures heavily stocked by horses, leading to outbreakes of disease. Ingestion of low numbers of organisms does not result in disease (om inte försvagat immunförsvar). Foals over 6 months of age seems to be refractory to pulmonary infection. Superficial abscesses due to r.equi haven been recorded in horses over 6 months of age.
Clinical signs
Acute disease often occurs in one-monts old foals, with sudden onset of fever, anorexia and signs of bronchopneumonia. The disease seems to be insidious in 2 to 4 month-old foals and lesions can be well advanced before the animal exhibits coughing, dyspnoea, weight loss, excersive intolerans and characteristic loud, moist rales on ascultation of the lungs. Affected foals may occasionally have diarrhoea.
Diagnos
- A history of the disease on the farm, the age of the foal and clinical signs may suggest inf. with r.equi
- Ascultation and radiography of the thorax provide confirmatory evidence of pulmonary involvment.
- Speciemens for labratory examination include tracheal aspirates and pus from lesions.
- Over 10^6 (10 upphöjt till 6) r.equi/g of faeces may be of diagnostic value.
Treatment
-A combination of oral rifampin and erythromycin for 4-10 weeks, although expensive, is the preferred treatment. However severly affected foals may fail to respond.
- Supportive theraphy incl. rehydration abd the use of bronchodilatory agents or expectorants.
No vaccin are available. On farms where the disease has occured foals should be kept under observation and clinically examined twice weekly until the age of 4 months. Prevention: Remove foal manure at frequent intervalls, Foal and their dams should be moved regularly to fresh pastures, Dusty conditions in paddocks and holding yards should be minimized.
R.equi hette tidigare Corynebacterium equi så testa att söka på det namnet med.
