Å, CR Kay Suzie
"A winner of seven of nine races as a two-year-old, resulting 1994 divisional champion CR Kay Suzie set world records on every size track in 1994 and in each case, shattered not just the filly mark, but any two-year-old trotting mark. Her world record of 1:55.1 for a freshman still stands today.
Her wins at two include:
Merrie Annabelle
New Jersey Futurity
New Jersey Sires Stakes Final
Goldsmith Maid
At three:
Yonkers Trot
Budweiser Beacon Course
World Trotting Derby
Cadillac Breeders Crown Mare Trot*
(CR Kay Suzie’s two heat world record was erased last Saturday when Continentalvictory captured the Hambletonian in 3:45)
She meets her nemesis Tagliabue in this race. The overwhelming favorite for the ‘95 Hambletonian, CR Kay Suzie stunned onlookers when she stepped offstride in her Hambo elimination. John Campbell held together Tagliabue (who also made a break in the mile), and they won both that elimination and the Hambletonian final. Though this meeting can not be dubbed a "rematch", Tagliabue is the first Hambletonian winner to resume a racing career in the U.S. since Mack Lobell in 1988.
"Suzie" broke again in her 1996 Meadowlands debut, the Nat Ray eliminations. "She got herself all wound up in that start," Rod said. "I tried to keep her off the gate and get her up there nice and quiet but she didn’t like that. The second time I put her on the gate she reacted in the same way. When I finally did get her to trot out in the stretch she was hitting good. It was just a matter of getting the sting out of her. I think with all the excitement in the paddock, etc., it was just too much for her."
Og videre:
"That was not the case last week in the Nat Ray elims, Suzie’s first start of the year. "She was wound up all night long," Allen recalled. "First she refused to get behind the gate and was stomping. The second time she was pushing the [starting] car."
