"Oats
Many have called oats the perfect grain for horses and it is easy to see why. Not only does it have a good nutritional profile but is higher in fiber than other grains. Oats are the most palatable of all the grains, though individual variations between horses exist. Oats suffer from two problems, a growing scarcity and significantly increased cost when compared to corn on an energy basis. If good quality corn is available, it is not certain that oats are worth the extra cost."
"Oats vs Corn
Compared to oats, corn is low in fiber and much denser than oats. Volume for volume it contains twice as much energy as oats. One cup of oats equals one-half cup of corn in energy. When adjustments for weight and energy content are made, corn is no more or less fattening than oats and does not make horses act hotter. Corn is not a heating feed either, in fact oats produce more heat when utilized than corn due to its higher fiber content. Corn however lacks the safety margin against the effects of excess consumption that oats provide against cecal acidosis, laminitis, diarrhea, and colic."
