Global climate change has begun to rightfully take center stake, as more and more dire predictions flood in from scientists around the world. Awareness is growing, especially among the younger generation who’ll have to deal with the mess previous generations leave behind. Greta Thunberg is the current voice for a collective fear of the future among the young. That politicians say the right things but refuse to act in their fear to hinder economic growth and increase unemployment at the cost of the future is as short sighted as it’s expected.
Against this backdrop it’s astounding that not more is done to prevent unnecessary pollution through an ever increased production of electronics that is unable to be repaired and will instead necessitate buying a new. Is it necessary to own multiple electronic devices, a smartphone (or two) a tablet, a laptop, a desktop? Today’s manufacturers, among them Hewlett-Packard, Sony, Apple, Samsung to name a few are all producing electronics that are made to discard not repair. Purchasing a new smartphone, one whose expected lifespan is not more than a year or two, rather than being able to repair the old is in light of the precarious human and environmental situation, insanity at the very least. The second largest rainforest, after the Amazonas, in west Africa, has lost acreage of forest the size of Honduras in the last ten years and deforestation is increasing more rapidly largely because of strip mining in search of kobalt and other precious metals without which most electronics can’t be produced.
The western world who consume most of the earth’s resources must in the end take responsibility. Too many argue that one individual cannot change the world. Just like one ant can’t build an anthill. However, thousands of ants will. In democracies the most powerful tool is to vote for politicians who’ll make the hard decisions even at the cost of decreased living standard. Unfortunately, voters as short sighted as the politicians they elect are unlikely to do so.
So is there hope for the future, for planet Earth and the generation who is young today and even more for those yet to be born? Can humans survive the coming storm or will we go the way of the dodo? There is an old Chinese proverb, the journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. To refrain from buying a new device, to demand of manufacturers that the electronics we buy can be repaired and be made to last, may be that first step on humanity’s journey to survival.
